Characteristics - Male Muntjacs have short antlers. Females do not have antlers. . Males also possess sharp canine teeth which can inflict damage on a rival. They have reddish brown colour and eyebrows are obvious.
Range - Red Muntjac (OR) Barking Deer is found in Myanmar, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indochina, Lao, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Southern China. It can also be found in Melayu, Sumatra, Java and Borneo Inland.
Habit - They are solitary animals but sometimes they can be found in pairs. But they cannot be found in groups. They can be found near water. They eat shoots, tree barks and fallen fruits. They always search for foods similar routs each day. Muntjacs are also known as 'barking deers' because of their dog-like calls when they face something frightened. The muntjac antlers are shed yearly during May and June.
Diet - Its typical diet includes grass, young leaves, shoots, tree barks and fallen fruits.
Conservation status rank - Although the possibility and risk of extinction is still less, their skins are used to make clothes and thus number of Red Muntjac (or) Barking Deer become significantly less, they will soon be faced with the danger of extinction and so they are listed and preserved as Least Concerned on the IUCN Red List.
