Mo Mo

Mo Mo is a beloved female elephant of Yangon Zoological Gardens who arrived at the zoo when she was about seven years old. Over the years she became a symbol of the zoo and gained affection from visitors for her gentle nature and long life.

Detailed Information

Mo Mo the elephant was donated to Yangon Zoological Gardens in 1961 by U Khun Sanda, a timber businessman from Loikaw City in Kayah State. At the time of her arrival, Mo Mo was approximately seven years old.

Mo Mo later became one of the most well-known and beloved animals at Yangon Zoo. She was admired by visitors for her friendly behavior and gentle nature. As a famous elderly female Asian elephant at Yangon Zoological Gardens, Mo Mo performed dances and other trained behaviors for many decades, which made her especially popular with visitors.

Mo Mo is also well known for her longevity. Since she turned 60 years old, her birthday has been celebrated every year as a special event at Yangon Zoo.

After reaching the age of 60, Mo Mo stopped performing for the public. She now lives peacefully under the care of her keeper together with other elephants at Yangon Zoological Gardens. Mo Mo is regarded as the leader of the elephant herd at the zoo and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of both staff and visitors.
