A historic public institution dedicated to wildlife conservation, education, and national heritage since the early 20th century.

Yangon Zoological Gardens

Yangon Zoological Gardens is one of Myanmar’s oldest and most significant public institutions. It serves as a center for animal care, conservation, education, and recreation, while preserving natural heritage for future generations.

History of Yangon Zoo

A legacy built by public support and national pride.

In 1901, Yangon Zoological Garden was founded with public funding amounting to 240,000 Rupees. The zoo was developed at its present location after clearing 61 acres of virgin land, reflecting strong public commitment to creating a national zoological garden.

On 25 January 1906, the zoo was formally opened and named Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Garden in honor of Queen Victoria. Over time, the zoo has evolved into a major center for conservation, education, research and public recreation in Myanmar.
