Tigers are carefully fed

11 March 2026 Yangon Zoo Administration News

Tigers are carefully fed with a well-planned and nutritious diet to keep them strong and healthy. Today, we would like to share some information about how tigers are prepared and fed at the zoo, as this is one of the topics many visitors are curious about.

At the zoological gardens in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay, tigers are among the carnivorous animals under professional care. Their feeding is carefully managed to ensure proper nutrition, safety, and stimulation of their natural instincts.

Tigers are carnivores and, in the wild, they usually eat raw meat that includes skin, bones, tendons, organs, and fur. In zoos, their food is specially prepared to meet their dietary needs while maintaining their natural feeding habits.

At the zoological gardens in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay, tigers are mainly fed fresh beef. The amount of food given varies depending on the age and sex of the animal. Adult male tigers are fed about three viss of beef per day, while adult female tigers are fed about two viss and seventy-five kyats-tha of beef daily.

When preparing food for the tigers under human care, it is important not only to provide protein but also to ensure they receive other essential nutrients. Therefore, calcium and multivitamins are mixed with the meat to maintain a balanced diet.

If individual tigers have specific needs, additional supplements are also provided. Tigers and other members of the big cat family are given one fasting day each week, usually on Monday. Keepers also monitor whether the food provided is fully consumed and maintain detailed records of the animals’ health conditions to ensure proper feeding management.

In the wild, tigers usually do not hunt during the daytime but become active hunters at night. When they catch prey, they may consume between 30 and 50 kilograms of meat in a single feeding. After such a meal, they may rest for several days before hunting again.

As members of the big cat family, tigers are known for their well-proportioned bodies, sleek and shiny coats, and graceful movements. These features make them one of the most striking and majestic animals among the cat species.

Because tigers naturally hunt for their food in the wild, zoos also provide feeding enrichment programs. These activities encourage natural hunting behaviors and provide mental and physical stimulation for the animals.

The information shared here is intended to provide knowledge about how tigers are fed and cared for at the zoological gardens in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay, based on animal care records and feeding management practices.

Visitors who wish to learn more about the feeding, living conditions, and natural behaviors of tigers are warmly invited to visit the zoological gardens where these magnificent animals are cared for.
